COB vs SMD Comparison

Dalam aplikasi LED videotron/video wall, dua teknologi yang paling umum adalah COB (Chip-On-Board) dan SMD (Surface Mounted Device). Pemilihan bergantung pada target pixel pitch, jarak pandang, lingkungan, dan kebutuhan perawatan.

COB — Ringkasan

Chip RGB di-bond langsung ke PCB lalu dilapisi film pelindung untuk meningkatkan ketahanan, kontras, dan viewing angle. Umumnya dipilih untuk fine/ultra-fine pitch (< 1.5 mm).

  • Flip-chip COB → lebih terang, kontras lebih baik, paket lebih tipis, konsumsi daya bisa ±20% lebih rendah, stabil karena tanpa wire bonding.

SMD — Ringkasan

Paket LED 3-in-1 (RGB) dipasang ke PCB via SMT & wire bonding. Teknologi paling matang untuk berbagai ukuran, umumnya ≥ 1.2 mm baik indoor maupun outdoor.

  • Plus: biaya lebih rendah, rantai pasok luas, perbaikan per titik LED mudah, fleksibel untuk bentuk/curve.
  • Catatan: ketahanan bentur lebih rendah; kontras dan efisiensi sedikit di bawah COB pada pitch halus.

In LED videowall/videotron applications, the two most common technologies are COB (Chip-On-Board) and SMD (Surface Mounted Device). The choice depends on the target pixel pitch, viewing distance, environment, and maintenance strategy.

COB — Summary

RGB chips are die-bonded directly to the PCB and coated with a protective film. Typically chosen for fine/ultra-fine pitch (< 1.5 mm).

  • Flip-chip COB → higher brightness, better contrast, thinner package, up to ~20% lower power, improved stability.

SMD — Summary

3-in-1 RGB LED packages mounted via SMT & wire bonding. The most mature technology, ≥ 1.2 mm for indoor & outdoor.

  • Pros: lower cost, wide supply chain, easy pixel repair, flexible for curves.
  • Notes: lower impact resistance; slightly lower contrast/efficiency at fine pitch.
